Inside Uptick’s Security Assessment: A Pen Test Powered by RedBear

Introducing Uptick

Uptick set out to build the world’s leading fire protection platform, driven by a vision to make buildings safer through greater transparency in life, health and safety compliance. Founded in 2014 in response to the shift from paper-based forms to asset-based compliance, Uptick has grown into a team of over 100 staff across three regions. Its platform supports building owners, facility managers and contractors with tools that enhance visibility, control and accountability over critical safety assets. Widely adopted by councils and compliance professionals, Uptick continues to lead the way in moving toward smarter, more transparent safety standards.

Enter RedBear

Uptick rotates its penetration testing provider each year and approached RedBear following a recommendation. What began as a standard security check evolved into a broader engagement. Following a series of scoping conversations, RedBear proposed a more comprehensive assessment that covered application testing and cloud architecture, including an AWS Well-Architected Framework Review. Throughout the process, Uptick had direct access to RedBear’s senior team, who tailored their approach based on repository-level access and company context. Their ability to bundle findings into a clear, consolidated review added value and efficiency during internal reporting and planning.

The RedBear team was responsive and generous with their time at every stage of the process. They were flexible with our scheduling needs and accommodating around invoicing, which made the engagement easy to manage. We’d be happy to return to RedBear for another penetration test in the future.

The Outcomes

RedBear did not uncover any significant risks, but they did identify several inconsistencies that supported operational improvement. They gave Uptick the white-glove treatment, including direct access to senior leadership and flexibility around timing and invoicing, which helped build a strong working relationship and ensured the process ran smoothly.

  • Expanded from a basic pen test to a full security and architecture assessment
  • Flexible delivery aligned with Uptick’s operational needs
  • Identified inconsistencies that informed internal improvements
  • Enhanced peace of mind and strengthened security assurance
